Philip Newton Photographer - I grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada looking at Life magazines. It was these reportage photographs that first captured my imagination. I began as a photographer with a Brownie camera taking pictures of my pets, family and friends; as is the case with most children armed with a camera. Mine was a family of artists and scientists so I suppose that the marriage of those two disciplines naturally led me to photography.
Philip Newton Fashion Photographer - I began working professionally nearly 20 years ago in the streets and studios of NYC. How I got there was by assisting commercial photographers while finishing Art College. I am most indebted to the photographer Arthur Elgort from whom I learned things about fashion and photography that stay with me to this day. Besides the obvious factors that go into making a fashion photograph, what concerns me most is the reality or emotion of the picture. I am concerned with the “decisive moment” that not only describes an action or place but an emotional reality. Fashion has been my passport to a world of people, places and photographic opportunities. It’s been a great wave to surf!
Philip Newton Sport Photographer - I’m not a fan of professional sports, but I am a huge fan of the athlete. It’s an exciting and compelling subject for me to shoot. Early in my career I started working with sportswear companies as the style of my fashion photography lent itself to sport. I shoot on the move like a journalist using the available light and environment. I have traveled the world shooting everything from World Cup football players in their locker room to teenage Kazak boys racing horses on the steppes of Central Asia. It is always challenging and fun to photograph sports, baring golf… try to make that look exciting!
Philip Newton Child Photographer - Having patience or compassion with children is essential to successfully photographing them. I have three of my own so have some first hand experience but must admit that I do like to play! I like to engage them; to hook and reel them in so that the process of being photographed is not work but fun. I work hard so that they are unaware of the process and just get to be kids, not models. Photographing children is a bit like being a wildlife photographer; you have to know where and when to wait for your prey, have tremendous patience and then be lightning fast when the moment presents itself.
Philip Newton Travel Photographer - In travel photography searching seems to be the major concern. This comes naturally to me as the camera is always with me and I’m always observing. It’s a bit like playing an instrument; the more you practice the better you see. What interests me about travel photography is to find the picture that is not the postcard. How can you look at Trafalgar square and not shoot Nelson up there on his pedestal? How can you imply rather than literally describe? Ultimately one also has to like to travel; and after 20 years of living like a gypsy I am well qualified.
Philip Newton Portrait Photographer - They are all portraits; be the subjects people, places, moments or ultimately some kind of emotion.
